MIDROC signs agreement for 10 hotels in Ethiopia with Dubai-based company
MIDROC Investment Group, one of Ethiopia’s largest private business conglomerates, has signed a master agreement with The First Group Hospitality to develop and operate 10 properties across Ethiopia.
Headquartered in Nairobi, MIDROC Investment Group operates across six main sectors: agriculture, manufacturing, mining, commerce, construction and real estate and hospitality. The group already has an extensive presence in the hospitality sector, with plans to soon add ten more properties to its portfolio.
The new hotels being developed are expected to deliver approximately 1,140 keys. The developments, planned to open in a phased manner between 2026 and 2031, span independent and Marriott-branded franchised properties in key urban and gateway destinations, including Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Bahir Dar, Jimma, Langano and Danbi.
The partnership with The First Group Hospitality will see the Dubai-headquartered company share responsibility for the development of the hotels and lead operations once they enter the market.
The First Group Hospitality is a third-party hotel management provider specializing in hotel operations, asset management, and food & beverage. Its team supports hotel owners in ensuring that guest experience, property performance, operational excellence, cost management, and people management meet expectations.
The Arab company already has a large portfolio of hotels under management in the Gulf region, including Ciel Dubai Marina, and Vignette Collection by IHG (the world’s tallest hotel). The First Group Hospitality has franchise agreements with Marriott International, Radisson Hotel Group and IHG.
“Ethiopia represents one of the most compelling hospitality growth markets in East Africa, supported by ongoing investment in tourism and infrastructure. Our agreement with MIDROC Investment Group allows us to establish a substantial footprint in the market alongside a partner with deep local expertise, while delivering high-performing assets and creating long-term value across key destinations,” said David Thomson, Senior Vice President at The First Group Hospitality.
Solomon Zewdu, Deputy CEO of MIDROC Investment Group’s Hospitality arm, added: “We are delighted to partner with The First Group Hospitality, combining their strong track record in development and operations with a shared vision to drive sustainable tourism growth across Ethiopia.
