The KPMG Digital Summit 2019 has taken place in Victoria Island, Lagos, and senior executives at the firm have taken the opportunity to reiterate the importance of digital advancement for Nigeria going forth. The firm also used the event to deliver insights on artificial intelligence (AI) in the country.

Tech has been at the forefront of business discussions in Nigeria recently, as experts have made it clear that it is the way forward for the country. Touted as a driver of economic growth and the largest economy in Africa, the onus is on Nigeria to develop an internationally competitive business environment.

Investing in technology is central to this scenario, as is innovation. KPMG has been among the most active in the efforts to drive an innovative mindset across the country, a sentiment that it reiterated at the latest KPMG Digital Summit held in Lagos.

“Being able to drive transformational customer experiences and leveraging insights from available data is critical to business growth and scale. Underpinning successful business strategy is innovation; for us, winning comes through experience, insights and design thinking,” explained Boye Ademola, Partner & Lead for Digital Transformation at KPMG in Africa.

While technological investment has grown across some sectors in Nigeria, the use of data to drive growth is yet to pick up pace. KPMG analysis from earlier this year revealed that data & analytics is still not a priority for most businesses in Nigeria, with more than half indicating that intuition rather than data was the basis for their decision-making.

Nevertheless, a variety of sectors have begun to recognise the value of digital investment, while market leaders are pushing to accelerate the process. Fellow Big Four accounting and advisory firm PwC, for instance, recently established an tech and innovation centre in the country to help drive growth in that direction.

Commenting on the event, KPMG Nigeria Chairman Kunle Elebute said, “this is the third in the series of events by KPMG to provide insights to organisations on how to leverage digital to create transformational value. This summit attracts a variety of business leaders from various sectors of the economy.”
