African technology company Cassava Technologies has agreed a strategic collaboration with Accenture, aimed at scaling the company’s sovereign AI capability across Africa.

One of Africa’s largest technology companies, Cassava Technologies provides a range of digital infrastructure services, including broadband connectivity, data centers, cybersecurity, and cloud services. The company operates the continent’s largest fiber optic network, spanning over 110,000 kilometers in 20+ countries.

The collaboration with Accenture will see the global consulting firm bring its sovereign AI solutions to the data centre facilities of Cassava Technologies. The solutions will enable customers of Cassava Technologies to process AI workloads and data within national borders in alignment with local requirements and regulations.

“Collaborating with Accenture allows us to leverage their global expertise in building a sovereign AI cloud capability designed for the African market. This partnership will strengthen data governance, drive practical AI adoption across key industries, and ensure that we provide African solutions for African challenges,” said Ahmed El Beheiry, Chief AI Officer at Cassava Technologies.

“With our GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS), we will drive the continent’s AI revolution by allowing businesses to access compute power based on their individual needs. This is our commitment to ensuring Africa has the infrastructure and access it needs to compete in the AI era,” he continued.

The partnership with Accenture will kick off in South Africa, and later expand into Egypt, Kenya, Morocco and Nigeria. Key sectors targeted include financial services, mining, telecommunications, agriculture and healthcare.

Commenting on the collaboration, Mauro Macchi, the CEO of Accenture for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “AI is opening up exciting new opportunities for sparking innovation, advancing competitiveness and driving growth across Africa.”

“With our deep, global experience in sovereign cloud and AI, Accenture will help Cassava Technologies deliver secure, scalable sovereign AI solutions and reimagine its operations. Together, we will enable organizations across the African continent to adopt AI with confidence and unlock new ways to create value.”

According to research from McKinsey & Company, artificial intelligence could unlock billions of additional economic value across Africa’s economies and sectors. Generative AI alone is estimated to bring benefits of around $100 billion.
