Angola has enlisted Lufthansa Consulting to help overhaul its national carrier, TAAG Angola Airlines, in a move officials say is central to transforming the country into a regional aviation hub.

The agreement, signed by Angola’s Transport Minister Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu, was announced as part of a wider bilateral air services deal between Germany and Angola, opening the door to deeper cooperation on investment, tourism and direct connectivity.

“This partnership is a decisive step in consolidating the Government’s vision for the transport sector,” D’Abreu said. “Our ambition is to equip TAAG Angola Airlines (TAAG) with levels of efficiency and profitability that meet the demands of the global market.”

A carrier with history – and headwinds

TAAG, created in 1938 and still fully state-owned, has long played an outsized role in Angola’s economic and political landscape. Its fleet of about 20 aircraft – including Boeing 777s, Boeing 737s and De Havilland Dash 8 turboprops – connects remote domestic regions with Luanda while offering routes to Europe, Brazil and countries across Africa.

But the airline has been under pressure for years. Industry analysts point to chronic financial losses, an ageing fleet, governance concerns, and operational hiccups ranging from maintenance delays to inconsistent scheduling. Expansion has also been hampered by stiff competition from fast-modernising rival carriers.

Despite those headwinds, TAAG has an important edge when it comes to Angola’s geographic position on the southwest edge of the continent, which gives it opportunities to serve as a connecting hub between southern Africa, Europe and South America. The recent opening of the Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport – a modern and efficient airport – is another advantage that can support’s TAAG plans.

Lufthansa Consulting’s remit

As part of the partnership, Lufthansa Consulting will advise TAAG on a sweeping set of reforms, from corporate governance to operations, engineering, maintenance and route planning. The goal is to improve reliability, optimise the network and put the airline on a more commercial footing.

Angolan officials say the reforms are designed not just to stabilise TAAG, but to help diversify the wider economy by boosting tourism, logistics and international investment.

In a statement, Lufthansa Consulting described the project as a “decisive step” in shaping the future of Angola’s national carrier. Headquartered in Germany, Lufthansa Consulting is the management and technical consulting arm of Lufthansa and is recognized among the leading players in the industry.

With Lufthansa consultants now on board, the coming year will be critical for determining whether TAAG can turn its ambitions into a viable, modern airline capable of competing in a rapidly evolving African aviation market.
